Hey! The boys finished its 40-episode series spanning seven years with a series finale that will be talked about for years to come, for better or worse. Episode 8 of Season 5 wasn’t everything I wanted, but it was good enough for where the series had gotten to. Not everyone agrees. While some fans found this a pleasant surprise given how much they feared the series would go off the rails, others remain dissatisfied with how many loose threads were left hanging in the wind.
If you haven’t already watched the finale and somehow still haven’t been spoiled on the ending despite the internet being full of screenshots, turn back now. You have been warned.
On the way to The boys season 5, episode 8, some people predicted an epic and botched ending that would even give Game of Thrones’ catastrophic “And who has a better story than Bran? conclusion a run for his money. Instead, it has come to what has seemed like an inevitable conclusion for over a season now. Homelander is stripped of his powers, the supe is shown without his metaphorical clothes, and the catharsis that viewers have been waiting for for five seasons is delivered.
Was it worth the wait? Here’s what people are saying:
It’s funny how after Kimiko takes away the Butcher’s powers, he doesn’t immediately start dying.
You know, because the end of last season showed that he was only alive because he bonded with the parasite he contracted while taking Compound V?
This would require good writing though pic.twitter.com/vLqJNNj0sd

The Boys will be forgotten almost immediately.
This ending sucked.
Don’t bother with all the fallout.
If Gen V couldn’t hold the audience while The Boys was still on the air, you don’t stand a chance after this shitty ending. pic.twitter.com/Pdxm9MbGcw

Oh look, it took three awesome adults to hold Homelander back by the way.
Now the Butcher tentacles are at his level?
Remember at the start of the season his lasers cut kimiko in half now it doesn’t even leave a scratch on anyone 😭😭 https://t.co/QSM0TtZUFi

Homelander turned immortal in episode 6 then killed 2 episodes later is bad writing lmao.
Arc V1 should have been done in S4 without implying that the virus can’t work on it and that being one of the twists.
Terrible last season. #TheBoys

the way Homelander’s body language changed after losing his powers was so good he’s literally a child. Antony Starr you are fantastic pic.twitter.com/As96QcCjTh

No, this particular scene was perfect for me. The series pretty much explains that he’s a psychopathic kid with no real fighting skills outside of spamming his laser eyes and super strength. Without them, that’s exactly what he is: a pathetic man throwing a tantrum. https://t.co/UgbO9Z8lZh

I think the people angry at Homelander’s fate are the ones who saw him as a Chadian hero and not the pathetic, insecure guy he had always been.

The Stranger Things finale was so bad that a large group of people were trying to convince you there was a secret episode and GOT had a petition to remake the final season.
There’s no way this episode of The Boys is in the same league https://t.co/3z0UMHkPOS

The Boys series finale was good. Not surprising, not full of risks or surprises, but oh well.
I’m happy with how the stories ended and I’m actually surprised by so much packed in without feeling too rushed.
Seasons 4 and 5 got carried away with satire but ended well enough. Appreciated. pic.twitter.com/GDxIKBTkPU

So Oh Father has just died. No sort of resolution to the arc they developed of him questioning his faith or anything
No, he just dies screaming into a ball gag. What a waste pic.twitter.com/lraToEBG5u

Shit season. Ultimately, an extremely disappointing and unsentimental final episode for the boys.😡They lied in marketing. I’m pissed!🤬Angry Rant is coming! Our opinion soon!

The Boys season 5 finale review.
> The fight scenes could have been longer and better
> Frenchie’s funeral should have had an impact, they made it a joke
>The death of terror was sad
> Homelander’s death was pathetic as expected
> Finally, Deep got what he deserved
> MM will increase… pic.twitter.com/x8Ayo11xOP

> There was no “scorched earth”
>Videotape of Flight 47 is wasted
> Shameless Vought Rising ad
> Generation V characters wasted
> Wasted Soldier Boy
> Our time was wasted
I’m glad The Boys is over. Terrible dog shit pic.twitter.com/sYRIzQD7SW

I honestly don’t understand why people are complaining about Homelander’s ending in the final season of The Boys.
Come on, it’s the final. Butcher and the team only had one real chance, so obviously they were going to give it their all.
And realistically, Butcher and Ryan are strong… pic.twitter.com/SouabhcAuc

Some of these criticisms I receive. There were certainly plenty of subplots and scenes that went nowhere, and plenty of characters who were shortchanged as the train rushed toward its final station. But if you were expecting an epic final battle from a series based on parodying this exact kind of storytelling, well, I don’t know what to tell you. The problem perhaps comes less from the creative direction of showrunner Eric Kripke than from the understanding of certain people regarding television.
I think at the end of the day, a lot of people are still complaining The boys just wouldn’t have been satisfied with anything less than another whole season or two. Unfortunately, the show is now over as Amazon Prime moves to Vought Rising. This spin-off won’t air until 2027. Anyone still yearning for a more sociopathic comic book superhero satire will have to return to the original source material in the meantime. The comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson ran for 72 issues and ended with a different ending than the series.
