In my mind, the “bring a plate” theme could only mean one thing: the buffet. Having spotted no letter F in the game, I wasted some time trying to self-service, but that one was also missing.

Although POTLUCK is a similar idea to a buffet, the spangram was the last thing I found on the table as I walked around it, getting hungrier and hungrier.

I also needed a clue today, which meant I had to start at the end with DESSERT. After my next pun, CASSEROLE, I couldn’t help but think of the comedy song I can’t go back to salty now by John Shuttleworth, the story of a man’s struggle to return to his main course after enjoying his pudding.

Strands is the not-so-new pun from The New York Times, after Wordle and Connections. It’s now a full member of the year-old NYT games stable and can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
