The owners Caroline Gardiner and Alan Lucas have transformed the 17th century inn from a pub into a restaurant with rooms, with a muted cozy atmosphere. If trampling the Mendip Hills with your dog is your idea of paradise, then this is a great place to lay your two heads.
As well as lovely walks around the village and surrounding countryside, the hostel has two dog friendly lodges. Here, everything is in the detail. Barlake, where I stay with my spaniel Bumble, has a water bowl, a soft dog bed and a blanket. Just outside the gate is a large field in which dogs can sniff and potter in the evening.
