Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and other companies at the forefront of developing artificial intelligence technology have agreed to abide by a set of safeguards negotiated by the Joe Biden administration.

The White House said it has secured voluntary commitments from seven U.S. companies to ensure the safety of their AI products before commercialization.

Some of the commitments call for third-party oversight of the operation of commercial AI systems, although they do not specify who will audit the technology or hold the companies accountable.

A wave of commercial investment in generative AI tools capable of writing compelling human-like text and producing new images and other media has sparked public fascination as well as concerns about their ability to deceive people and spread misinformation, among other dangers.
