Amber Heard has settled her libel case against Johnny Depp. Heard broke the news in a lengthy Instagram post on Dec. 19. In June, a seven-person jury in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia found Heard liable on three counts of defamation to Depp and Depp liable for one count of defamation to Heard, Time confirmed. The jury awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, and $2 million in compensatory damages to Heard. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Times reported that Heard was appealing the court's decision. The Times wrote that Heard's attorneys claimed there were "numerous errors made during the trial, including allowing the case to be heard in Virginia and denying communications between Heard and certain physicians to be admitted. as proof".

In his new statement, Heard wrote, "It is important for me to say that I never chose this. I stood up for my truth, and in doing so, my life as I knew it was destroyed. The defamation I have faced on social media media is an amplified version of how women are re-victimized when they come forward." Later in the statement, she wrote, "I made no confession. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags on my voice moving forward. "
