Ron Gittins' unique work was discovered in Birkenhead, Wirral following his death in 2019.
The Silverdale Road apartment is the first example of so-called outsider art, made by people without conventional training, to be listed nationally.
Historic England said the list recognized Mr Gittens' "unique artistic achievements and vision".
It was only after his death, at the age of 79, that those close to him discovered the strange and wonderful secret world he had created for himself.
His artwork, inspired by ancient Greece and ancient Egypt, included fireplaces in the shapes of lions and minotaurs, Egyptian and Greek. floor-to-ceiling painted murals and a Roman altar in the kitchen.
