Mercury Prize: Food from canceled show is donated to the homeless

Restaurant owner says the nation has 'rallyed' as a team of volunteers head out is rushed to collect food at a canceled event to feed 250 homeless people.

The Mercury Awards ceremony at the Hammersmith Apollo has been canceled following news of the Queen's death on Thursday.

Shortlisted artist and singer Self Esteem issued a call for help on Twitter and drew the attention of Amrit Maan, owner of the Punjab Covent Garden.

"It shows we can unite as a nation, we are one great tribe", he said.

After the cancellation of the west London ceremony for the best British album of the year, Mr Maan organized the 17 batches of food to be stored in his restaurant before distribution to the homeless over the weekend.

He said, "We are proud of our royalty , of the Queen and it was devastating to hear - [it's] like the death of a grandmother.

"And when this call arrived early evening, I didn't think twice about it."
