Ashley Giles: Worcestershire appoint former England and Warwickshire boss as chief executive

Although having been on the Warwickshire payroll three times, first as a player and then as a manager, Ashley Giles lived just across the border from Worcestershire

The 50-year-old Warwickshire and England former slow-arm spinner returns to cricket for the first time since stepping down as England chief executive in February 2022.

< p class="" data-reactid=".us75w2u39g.0.0.0.1.$paragraph-3"> Giles took on the lead role in England in 2018 after two successful training spells in Warwickshire, either side from a stint with Lancashire.

But he left in the fallout of the 4-0 defeat of the Ashes against Australia.

"I am absolutely honored and delighted," said Giles, who will take his new duties July 3.

"Having I resided in Worcestershire for 25 years, after being married and raising my children there, I have developed a deep appreciation for the club's rich history and recognize its immense potential."

After being contacted by both Warwickshire and Worcestershire over the winter, Giles' appointment by the Pears ends nearly 11 months of searching for a new main man, as the club originally advertised for the post of cricket manager.

Former Worcestershire fast bowler Paul Pridgeon, Chairman of the County Cricket Steering Group, and the County Chairman Fanos Hira focused on overseeing the club at this time.

Pridgeon, now aged 69, was due to retire at the end of last season.

What will Giles' role be at New Road?

Giles will oversee the Pears team, currently managed by former Bears teammate Alan Richardson, who worked under Giles during his second stint as Warwickshire boss.

Giles will also be responsible for the restructured off-field team led by Finance Manager Sarah Gluyas, newly promoted Sales and Partnerships Manager Joe Tromans and Head of of Helen Grayer Operations.

Hira added, "Ashley's unparalleled expertise and exceptional track record in cricket administration make him the final choice.

"We are confident that his dynamic leadership and unwavering passion will be indispensable assets."

Ashes 2005 - Giles' career highlight of another Ashes series, starting at Edgbaston on Friday.

Surrey-born Giles, who first joined Warwickshire playing on his own in 1993, took 539 first-class wickets and claimed 272 scalps in a professional career that lasted until 2007.

This included 143 scalps in 54 Tests for England - the highlight of which was making the team who won the Ashes for the first time in 18 years in 2005.
