The 36-year-old had taken a career-high 195 steps when rain stopped play at the Sydney cricket ground.

Khawaja, whose previous highest score was 174 against New Zealand in Brisbane in 2015, shared a stand of e 209 runs with Smith as they punished the beleaguered Proteas. In his own innings, Smith also passed Matthew Hayden and Michael Clarke to become Australia's fourth highest Test scorer.

Matt Renshaw, who tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, emerged from solitary confinement to join Khawaja in reaching the unbeaten five-in-one strains.

Australia sealed the series with wins in Melbourne and Brisbane and can secure their place in the final of the World Test Championship with another victory.
