A group of 24 Tory MPs have signed an eleventh-hour letter calling on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to cut fuel taxes in his autumn budget.

Former Home Secretary Priti Patel, chairman of the 1922 committee, Sir Graham Brady, and former Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis are among two dozen MPs calling for 'intervention criticism" ahead of tomorrow's long-awaited statement.

Former Education Minister Jonathan Gullis, who also used the petition to urge Mr Hunt to meet him and founder from campaign group Fair Fuel UK, to discuss "the blatant and unchecked exploitation of the fuel supply chain".

This comes after Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, said the UK economy had suffered a "significantly" worse recovery from Covid than the s US and EU.

Speaking at a Treasury Select Committee hearing, Mr Bailey told MPs there was a “striking” difference between the performance post-pandemic G DP economy and that of the US dollar and euro.

He said the UK economy was 0.7% smaller than at the end of 2019, while that the eurozone was 2.1%...
