How every Man Utd manager since Sir Alex Ferguson fared on his debut

Since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to retire at the end of the 2012-13 season, eight different managers have taken charge of Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag is the current dugout manager at Old Trafford, but the 52-year-old hasn't had a good start to his tenure at United.

We took a look at how these eight managers fared in their first games at the club.

Moyes David

Moyes was picked by Ferguson to replace him and had huge shoes to fill. The 59-year-old lasted just 10 months of his six-year contract as the Champions fell to a lowly seventh place with a few embarrassing defeats.

But Moyes began his United career in good form, beating 2013 FA Cup winners Wigan 2-0 in the Community Shield to secure his only silverware for the club.

Robin van Persie scored a goal in each half as United topped the recently relegated side, in a game which also saw Wilfried Zaha make his debut for the club.

Ryan Gigg

After Moyes was fired in April 2014, Giggs was named interim player-manager to replace him for the final four games of the season.

The Welshman's first game in charge came at home to Norwich City, and there was another clear manager's rebound as United lost 4-0 at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata each scored twice as the Canaries suffered their fifth successive defeat, and would be relegated that season.

Louis van Gaal

Despite a summer of big spending for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, Van Gaal lost his first game in charge of United in August 2014.

The eccentric Dutchman made his debut for Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard in a youthful starting XI against Swansea City but suffered their first home defeat on matchday one since 1972.

Goals from Ki-Seung Yeung and Gylfi Sigurdsson nullified Rooney's equalizer, and Swansea were good value for their win, which raised many questions for the hosts.

Jose Mourinho

Mourinho replaced Van Gaal in the summer of 2016 after United won the FA Cup final, meaning his first game in charge was the Community Shield against shock title winners Leicester City.

United ran out 2-1 wins, with goals from Lingard and debutant Zlatan Ibrahimovic helping win one of three trophies Mourinho would win this season.

The manager took this Community Shield win so seriously that he later included it in a 'treble', winning it alongside the League Cup and Europa League.

Still just a glorified friendly?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer briefly managed Cardiff City in 2014 and returned to Wales in December 2018 for his first game as United caretaker manager.

The Norwegian was trying to restore confidence in a side that had struggled to score goals under Mourinho, and his opener did just that. Smashing Cardiff 5-1 away, while playing smooth attacking football, gave United fans a glimmer of hope after a dismal start to the season.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring just three minutes later, and United were 3-1 up at half-time before two second-half Lingard goals completed the rout.

Michael Carrick

The former midfielder took on the temporary charge after Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021, and his first game in charge was a crucial Champions League group-stage draw at Villarreal.
