Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross said he believed Liz Truss could win the next general election on BBC Question Time, prompting roars of laughter from the audience.

Ms Truss has been at the helm for just over a month after Boris Johnson stepped down and is already under considerable pressure with talk of Tory plots to replace her.

The chaos was caused by a mini-budget from Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng which saw the pound fall to record lows against the dollar and after a reversal there is now talk of the government considering further tax changes.< /p>

In Question Time, senior Tory MP Mr Ross said he remained loyal to the Prime Minister, but there were laughs when he said he thought she would win the next election.

In response to a woman in the audience asking if he thought she would win, he replied, "Yeah, look."

But before he could go any further, there was laughter in the studio, and he finally continued, "I want the Conservatives to win every election."

Presenter Fiona Bruce chimed in: "You say that with a hell of a smile on your face, I can't read it."

Mr. Ross said, "I can imagine what you would say if I said no. I want the Conservatives to win every election."
