Liz Truss was due to land in New York today promising to continue sending vital military equipment to Ukraine.

The Prime Minister, on her first trip abroad since joining No 10, pledged to hand over billions of pounds worth of Kyiv equipment, with at least as much support in 2023 as the UK sent this year.

This comes as the Ukrainians retake thousands of square miles of territory seized by Russia after its February 24 invasion.

Before her plane took off from the UK, Ms Truss said: "The victories for Ukraine over the past few weeks have been inspiring.

“Time and again, these brave people have challenged doubters and shown what they can do when given the military, economic and political support they need.

"My message to the people of Ukraine is: the UK will continue to be with you every step of the way.

"Your security is our security."

The pledge will reassure Hero President Volodymyr Zelensky that, like his predecessor Boris Johnson, Ms. Truss will continue to support the Ukrainian resistance.
