Benetton RTW Spring 2023

As promised, Benetton's new creative head, Andrea Incontri, has delivered his first collection for the brand . Incontri set out to preserve Benetton's democratic and diverse DNA and succeeded, also sending this collection to all genders and all children. The collection was coveted: rib-knit skinny tops and matching pants; nubby jacket-short combos in the spirit of Chanel, and an array of fruit-covered intarsia knits in bold crayon colors, including tomato, yellow and green.

There were fruit patterns galore and more apples, pears and cherries in this show only at the local farmers market. Grandmothers around the world say “Eat your greens”, but at Benetton the message is more like “Feast on fruit” or “Wear your fruit on your sleeve”.

All the bright colors, lean proportions and layering looked fresh and modern and will ensure that Benetton, which manufactures its collections in sustainable virgin wool, remains competitive in a fierce market. Major European brands often default to synthetic (non-durable) fibers for their cheap and cheerful knitwear.

Although the show itself was too long and repetitive, kudos to Incontri for taking on a grand rue brand steeped in history and giving it a deliciously fresh touch.
