Boris Johnson pushed back on comments from would-be prime ministers Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak - saying the lockdown decisions during the Covid crisis were correct.

Both aspiring Prime Ministers have been accused of rewriting history to impress right-wing Conservative members, saying they were uncomfortable with the restrictions at the time.

Former Chancellor Mr Sunak claimed independent experts had too much power, while Foreign Secretary Ms Truss last night questioned 'draconian' measures put in place to save lives.

An investigation into the response to the Covid crisis is underway, with bereaved families sharply criticizing the government's failure to protect their loved ones.

Today the Prime Minister said that if the government does not lock down the country during the pandemic, "heart delays, hip delays, cancer treatment delays or other procedures that people care" would have been "even bigger".
