Pensioners should be guaranteed a minimum payment of £200 a week as the cost of living crisis hits Britain, campaigners demand tonight.

The Silver Voices group, which has led the fight for free TV licenses for the over-75s, wants the government to set a new floor for the amount PBOs receive as households are engulfed in the surge energy costs, runaway inflation and rising food prices.

A petition he started on the government's website calls for a 'minimum pension guarantee' of £200 a week 'to be set for all state pensioners, regardless of gender, marital status or contribution history, in order to remove anomalies from the pension system, including the growing gap between old and new state pensions”.

The petition, signed by more than 13,500 people, claims that "as of September 2020, only 6% of state pensioners received the highest rate of the new state pension".

He adds: "The UK offers the worst state pension in the developed world, which is insufficient for the basic needs of life, especially with soaring energy and food prices.< /p>

"After a lifetime of taxes and National Insurance contributions, old people deserve a minimum income of £200 a week without having to resort to the benefit system."

The petition has already crossed the threshold to trigger a government response, expected this week.

Silver Voices director Dennis Reed told the Mirror: 'Steps taken so far to support millions of struggling pensioners are minimal in the face of the cost of living disaster that is approaching this fall. ."
