Boris Johnson's leadership LIVE: Six more ministers quit as desperate PM hangs on

46 resignations and one dismissal

An unprecedented day in British politics yesterday saw 46 Tory MPs choose to resign from government instead of serving under Boris Johnson.

It started with the resignations of Health Secretary Sajid Javid and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, and ended with the departure of PPS Gareth Davies just before midnight.

Though everything fell apart around him, Prime Minister Boris Johnson persevered regardless, appearing in PMQs and sitting for two hours before a review board as if nothing had happened.

Reportedly a delegation of his own senior MPs, including his ally Home Secretary Priti Patel, met him at No 10 to tell him his time was up.

So much happened that Johnson's shocking admission that he met former KGB agent Alexander Lebedev without his security team barely caused a stir.

Johnson's authority is so shattered that her own general counsel, Suelle Braverman, even asked her to quit living on television and said she would run in any upcoming leadership election, but no didn't quit.

It saw more ministers resign from government in a day than ever before in a single day, breaking the previous record of 11 ministers resigning in September 1932.

Even in the face of it all, Johnson remained defiant, but a third day of chaos could bring more resignations and more trouble for the injured prime minister.
