Boris Johnson describes his sadness at the death of the Queen

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson shared details of his last private audience with the Queen days before her death, saying she was still 'bright and focused'.

The incumbent prime minister, who was the monarch's 14th leader, traveled to Balmoral to offer his resignation after the winner of the Tory leadership was announced on Monday. He was joined by his wife, Carrie.

Recalling the encounter in an interview with the BBC, he said: "One of the reasons it was so shocking to hear of her death on the 8th was because in that hearing she had been absolutely on it. Just two days before his death.

"She was actively focused on geopolitics, on British politics, quoting statesmen from the 1950s, it was quite extraordinary.

"She seemed very bright, very focused. Look, she clearly wasn't doing well, I think that's what I found so emotional when we all heard about her death two days later.

"I just thought about how her sense of duty allowed her to continue the way he did, given how obviously sick she was, how bright and focused she was. So it was quite an emotional time."

The Queen's last public duty was to officially make Liz Truss the country's new Prime Minister. The curator traveled to Balmoral shortly after Johnson for his first hearing in his new role.

The prime minister has weekly meetings with the monarch to get updates on what's going on in parliament.
