Boris Johnson faces growing calls to end to a 'drift summer' and take action on the cost of living crisis as he has been accused of letting hardened Britons down by refusing to offer new aid or even hold meetings of emergency.

Labour said the government's failure to act on spiraling inflation showed it had 'lost control' of the economy after No 10 hit rejected former Prime Minister Gordon Brown's call for parliament to be dismissed and an emergency budget.

The head of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has backed the call of Mr. Brown to immediate intervention, urging Mr. Johnson to meet show his Tory leadership rivals Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak to discuss potential help with soaring energy bills.

The Liberal Democrat press has called on the government to cancel regulator Ofgem's decision to raise the cap on energy bills after analysts predicted household energy bills could hit £3,600 in October.

And Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, called on the prime minister to discuss possible action with devolved heads of government this week. The SNP leader said the economy was "deteriorating rapidly" and many people across the UK could "not afford to wait until September for further measures".

< p>It comes as Tory MPs told The Independent that Mr Sunak and Ms Truss are expected to announce extra help with energy bills in September, regardless of campaign promises made in the race to succeed Mr Johnson in Number 10 in four weeks.
