A 16-year-old boy died after being shot in the head by an 81-year-old neighbor.

Prosecutors said the teenager died of his injuries in hospital on Wednesday evening, a day after the shooting in the northern German town of Bramsche.

The shooter, an Italian citizen, also shot the teenager's mother who had come to the house after hearing gunshots.

He missed it and she escaped unscathed.

But he then turned the gun on himself and is now hospitalized with serious injuries.

Prosecutors say the man was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted manslaughter.

A preliminary investigation revealed that there had been quarrels between different families in the neighborhood, but the motive for the shooting remains unclear.

The suspect was an amateur sniper and firearms enthusiast, prosecutors said, adding that he used a small-caliber pistol, described as a “typical sniper weapon” , during the murder.

A police spokeswoman said the victim and the alleged perpetrators were airlifted from the scene and taken by helicopter to nearby hospitals.
