Boris Johnson's political disappearance may being traced looks back at his key role in the 2016 Brexit referendum, Jacob Rees-Mogg has claimed.

Brexit Opportunities Minister, a Johnson loyalist who backed Liz Truss for the Tory leadership , suggested Remainers seeking revenge helped bring him down.

'I think part of the reason has to be Brexit,' he told GB News about Mr Johnson's downfall. "There are a lot of people who don't appreciate the fact that we left the European Union. And therefore bringing down the Brexit standard bearer was a triumph for them."

He added: "And you've had people like Lord Heseltine and Lord Adonis saying 'no Boris, no Brexit'. And I think they really meant it. And I really hope it doesn't. is not true."

Mr. Rees-Mogg also called on Labor MP Harriet Harman to 'resign' as chair of the Commons inquiry into whether the Prime Minister lied about Partygate.

The Conservative minister said that Ms Harman's critical tweets about Mr Johnson should rule her out of leading the cross-party privileges committee inquiry into whether he misled Parliament about his knowledge of rule-breaking gatherings. p>RecommendedLiz Truss comments that the Public Service woke Liz Truss comments on woke public service 'straying into anti-Semitism' condemned as 'abhorrent' < img src="https://static.independent.co.uk/2022/06/22/10/newFile-6.jpg?quality=75&width=230&auto=webp" alt="Brexit: do not rush into a bad trade deal with India, warn government business leaders" height="56" width="82" layout="responsive" class="i-amphtml-layout-responsive i-amphtml-layout-size- defined " i-amphtml-layout="responsive"/>Brexit: Don't rush into a bad India trade deal, government business leaders warnWill Rishi Sunak accept a deal with the EU on the protocol if he becomes Premier minister ?Does Is Rishi Sunak okay to deal with the EU on protocol if he becomes prime minister?
