Brexit: MPs to vote on key part of Rishi Sunak's protocol deal in days

MPs will get a vote on a key part of Rishi Sunak's new post-Brexit deal for Northern Ireland in Parliament next week.

They will be asked to approve a regulatory instrument on Wednesday relating to the so-called "Stormont brake" section of the agreement, Penny Mordaunt, leader of the House of Commons, announced.

It represents the Commons' first test for the Prime Minister's Windsor Framework Agreement with the EU to resolve the Northern Ireland Protocol line.

But No 10 said more votes would take place on different aspects of the deal, raising the prospect of a return to the Brexit showdown battles seen under Theresa May and Boris Johnson.

Asked whether more regulations would be passed, Mr. Sunak's spokesman replied: "I believe they will be. I think there is a series of IS which will be agreed by the House."

This comes as former Labor Prime Minister Tony Blair told MPs the Sunak deal was "the most practical way forward and "the best solution I think you can do with it".

The UK-EU deal aims to reduce the amount of bureaucracy on the movement of UK goods to the EU. 'Northern Ireland created by Mr Johnson's Brexit Withdrawal Agreement.

The Stormont Brake Mechanism allows a minority of Stormont politicians to formally signal their concerns about the imposition of any new EU goods legislation in Northern Ireland.

The process could ultimately lead to the UK government EU to veto their introduction, but Unionist DUP politicians remain unhappy with the arrangements.

Details of exactly how the brake is supposed to work are to be outlined in secondary legislation released on Monday. On Tuesday, a meeting of EU ministers at its General Affairs Council is expected to endorse the pact.

The European Research Group (ERG) of Brexiteers conservatives has commissioned a so-called "star chamber " of experts to review the agreement before deciding how to vote.
