Health service unions have warned of 'another costly upheaval' after Tory leadership hopeful Liz Truss suggested she would target the 'management layers' of the NHS.

Alarming figures show that health services are facing a huge staffing crisis, while struggling to clear a backlog of 6.6 million people awaiting planned treatment.

Ms Truss announced sweeping tax cuts estimated at around £30billion, but pledged not to decimate public services.

She did not, however, explain how this can be achieved, amid fears of further Conservative austerity.

Speaking earlier this week, Ms Truss appeared to suggest 'micromanaging people on the frontline' was holding the NHS back - saying she was focusing on management.

She said at an event hosted by TalkTV/The Sun: "There have been problems during Covid for people to get the support they need. I think the problem is that too often we lead and micromanage the people on the front lines, the doctors and nurses who do the work.

"What I want to see is less layers of management in the National Health Service and less central direction because I just don't think people...
