Thousands of British citizens are trapped in Sudan where deadly fighting has raged for a second week; some have even been forced to kill their own pets.

Further fighting erupted on April 15 after weeks of tension between the army and a powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

More than 4,000 British citizens as well as dozens of NHS doctors have been left behind in the African country amid deadly street fighting and a shortage of food, water and electricity.< /p>

Development Minister Andrew Mitchell told Radio 4 he 'can give no assurances' about rescuing the remaining Britons who are now desperate to survive.

Some even had to kill their own pets to save the poor animals from starvation, it has been claimed.

Without any help from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some are also considering fleeing the country on their own.

Mr. Mitchell told Radio 4: "I recognize that there will be some of our citizens who are very knowledgeable and who understand the situation locally extremely well and who may decide to take other options, but they do so at their own risk. and perils."
