Rishi Sunak retained Boris Johnson's former seat in Uxbridge - a victory widely seen in the wake of Ulez - despite two painful by-election blows.

The race for the former prime minister's constituency ended in a recount in the wee hours of Friday - but it was Mr Sunak's party that hung on, saving him from a triple defeat" disastrous' by-election embarrassment for Sir Keir Starmer.

But Tory MPs warned Mr Sunak that Labor was on course for victory in the general election after the double election thrashing in Selby and Somerton.

Nigel Mills, Tory MP for Amber Valley in Derbyshire, told The Independent that Selby's result was 'clearly not good' and meant that his 'red wall' colleagues in the North and Midlands would fear losing their own seats.

"It reinforces that we are in a really difficult position. No one doubts that we have a battle on our hands. If you lose a majority of 20,000 and the opposition is 20 points ahead of you, you will lose...
