Rishi Sunak should call MPs back from their summer break to pass last-minute legislation allowing pubs to serve alcohol ahead of the Lionesses World Cup final, according to the Lib Dems.

The party has called on the government to recall parliament - currently in summer recess - following demands from industry chiefs to be allowed to serve drinks earlier. Under current rules, most establishments cannot serve alcohol until 11 a.m. on Sunday, when the crucial game against Spain kicks off.

Daisy Cooper, deputy leader of the Lib Dem, said: "It's an open target for the government. The Lionesses made history by reaching the final, it's only right that people across the country can come together and show their full support on Sunday.

"MPs should head to Westminster tomorrow and score a last minute winner for our pubs and the Lionesses."

The British Beer and Pub Association, which represents more than 20,000 drinkers, wants the rules to be relaxed as soon as possible. Tory MP Alun Cairns, who chairs the Beer All-Party Parliamentary Group, said: "An early opening and service would be a fitting tribute to the Lionesses and a welcome boost to the industry.

"I have raised the issue directly with the Home Secretary who is looking at what is possible. We must do all we can to support the team, whilst supporting our great UK pubs."

Complex trading rules mean some venues can open earlier than others, and Wetherspoons told the Mirror it will be serving alcoholic drinks from 9am on Sundays. Ministers face pressure to ensure the level playing field on the big day.
