Cameroon 1-0 Brazil: Aboubakar scores famous victory but African side fail to qualify for Round of 16

Vincent Aboubakar scored in added time to see Cameroon beat Brazil 1-0 in the World Cup, but the African side failed to make it out of Group G.

In what could have been an even better night for the African side, another shock result this time didn't have the expected result as Switzerland's win over Serbia made Cameroon progress impossible, regardless of the 1-0 victory at the Lusail stadium.

For a brief period, Aboubakar's superb header in the third minute of added time made Cameroon believe in the impossible and federation president Samuel Eto'o frantically checked his phone in the section VIP for stadium 974 news.

Aboubakar received a second yellow card for removing his shirt and when the whistle sounded for Cameroon's first World Cup win in 20 years, they didn't wait long to find out their fate. Their joy was dampened after learning that Serbia didn't force the equalizer.

Already-qualified Brazil afforded themselves the luxury of making nine changes, including bringing in 39-year-old Dani Alves to become his country's oldest World Cup player, but their squad understaffed never lived up to expectations.

One of those new faces, Gabriel Martinelli, provided the bright spark for a relatively low-challenge first half with his powerful, twisting header off Fred's cross returned early by Devis Epassy.

The Arsenal striker's horizontal run along the edge of the penalty area in injury time also forced Cameroon's second-choice keeper into another fingertip save.

Between those two chances, Cameroon's threat to Ederson's goal at the other end was limited, with Nouhou Tolo's dangerous cross cleared by the Manchester City keeper, who then parried a header down by Bryan Mbeumo.

The Brentford winger had the honor of scoring the first shot on target of the tournament against the favorites.

At the start of the second half, Mbeumo attacked Aboubakar for an angled shot that sent Ederson over his goal, but with the news of Switzerland's lead over Serbia, Cameroon knew that even if he were to take the lead, it wouldn't be enough to save them.

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles left with an injury, covering his face with his shirt as he walked around the perimeter of the pitch, before Martinelli saw Epassy turn him down for the third time after that he cut from the left on his right foot.

The Cameroonian keeper was nearly hampered by Eder Militao's resulting group shot from the corner, but managed to recover and turn his fumble around the right post.

Substitute Bruno Guimaraes failed to connect properly with Raphinha's cross as Brazil's second string continued to waste chances and was eventually forced to pay.

Jerome Ngom Mbekeli swung in an inviting cross from the right and Aboubakar took full advantage to plant a header past Ederson.
