An out-of-control car slammed into a crowd at a major street party in southern Nigeria, killing seven and injuring many, authorities said.

The driver lost control of the car on a crowded street in Calabar, the capital of Cross River state, yesterday as people gathered to watch a parade of bikers at the Calabar Carnival, a declared the Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria.

Tuesday's biker show is one of the main highlights of the carnival event known as one of Africa's biggest street parties.

The annual carnival has regularly attracted people from across Nigeria and beyond since its inception nearly two decades ago.

Thousands of people had gathered to watch the bikers' stunts when the car slammed into people, scattering bodies and leaving injured people along the road, witnesses said.
