Chelsea 'preparing formal proposal' in 'firm desire' to beat Man Utd against De Jong

Chelsea are reportedly 'preparing an official proposal' for Manchester United's top target, Frenkie de Jong.

Manchester United's pursuit of De Jong has been thetransfer saga of the summer, with new boss Erik ten hag desperate to reunite with the midfielder after success together at the Ajax.

United agreed a £72million move with Barcelona but De Jong hung on and is currently on a pre-season tour with the La Liga side.

The 25-year-old wants to stay at Camp Nou but if forced to leave, he would rather join a club playing in the Champions League; that's where Chelsea come in.

There have been rumors of interest from the Blues, but now, according to Relovo, new owner Todd Boehly is "preparing a formal proposal" having "expressed a strong desire" to sign the Dutchman "in these last hours".

It is also confirmed that "Manchester does not appeal to the player, neither sportingly nor personally".

Chelsea are well supplied in midfield, particularly after Conor Gallagher returned from his loan spell with Crystal Palace, but with Jorginho and N'Golo Kante entering the final year of their contracts, De Jong could be the one of their replacements.

Meanwhile, former United striker Teddy Sheringham doesn't think De Jong would 'set the world on fire' at Old Trafford, and has urged United to consider some 'statement' signings.

"He's a big name, but I don't think he's the one who's going to set United the world on fire and really come in and grab it by the scruff of the neck," Sheringham said.

>

"If they had gone out and broken the bank for Declan Rice or Harry Kane - I know West Ham and Spurs fans will still berate me for saying that sort of thing - but that's what you have to do to make a statement.

"Ten Hag has a hell of a job to do to change the mood in the dressing room, but signings like that would change the whole philosophy of Man United's direction.

"The signings they made are correct at best...and that's how the fans will see it too."
