Eddie Izzard announces his candidacy to be Labor MP for Brighton

Comedian Eddie Izzard has announced that she is vying to be Labor MP for Brighton in the next election.

The comic star, who also uses the name Suzy, threw her hat in the ring to be a Labor candidate at Brighton Pavilion. Labor are eyeing the East Sussex seat, held by the only Green Party MP Caroline Lucas for 13 years.

Ms Lucas is stepping down at the next election, leaving a prime opportunity for Labor to try to overthrow her majority of 19,940. It holds the neighboring seats of Hove and Brighton Kemptown.

This is Eddie's latest attempt to secure a Westminster seat after she failed to win the race to be Labor's candidate in Sheffield Central last year. She would be Labour's first transgender MP if elected.

Eddie told the Brighton Argus: "I really want to be in politics. My legacy is here and I'll bring all the energy from everything I've done before.

"I want to promote Brighton's successes so that people in this country and around the world can learn more and more about it."

She praised incumbent MP Caroline Lucas but added: "An MP cannot form a government. The Green Party is the party of protest, the Conservative Party is the party of chaos and the Party Labor is the party of governance. We have a very good chance of being in government in the next election and if you want green policies and if you want good governance then vote me."

She added, "My mom passed away when I was six and I've been fighting ever since. If you want that energy, I'm here and ready to go."

Eddie, 61, said politics can be 'pretty dry' and her acting background could be an asset in Parliament.
