Comparison of illustrious Liverpool and Manchester United trophy cabinets

Manchester United and Liverpool are the most successful clubs in English football history, but how do the two compare?

Liverpool dominated English and European football in the 1970s and 80s while United struggled after the departure of Sir Matt Busby.

But Sir Alex Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford in 1986 and recovered from a difficult start to guide United through the most successful period in their history.

They have won a staggering 38 trophies during Ferguson's 26½ years in charge, which is more than half of their overall total.

Since Ferguson's retirement in 2013, the pendulum has swung again and Liverpool have become one of the best teams in the world under Jurgen Klopp.

We looked at the stats to see how their two trophy cabinets compare.

As the stats show, Liverpool and United currently have the same number of trophies in total following Klopp's 1-0 win over Manchester City in the 2022 Community Shield.

But the Red Devils still hold the record for most league titles and most Community Shields. They are also the second most successful club in FA Cup history and have won a few continental honours, including three European Cups.

Liverpool also have impressive records and no English team has won more League Cups, European Cups, UEFA Cups or UEFA Super Cups than them.

Some would say the Community Shield and the UEFA Super Cup are just glorified friendlies. If you remove these two from the list, Liverpool have 46 trophies and United have 44.

United are also in the midst of a trophy drought and Liverpool will be hoping to overtake their rivals in 2022-23.
