Constance Wu: I had to take a 'break' from Hollywood after another Asian actress told me I was a 'disgrace'

Constance Wu has returned to social media for the first time in three years to talk about her break from filmmaking.

Ahead of the release of her memoir 'Making a Scene,' the 'Crazy Rich Asians' actress opened up about the backlash she received after tweeting about the 'Fresh Off the Boat' renewal. Wu wrote (via ), "Fuckin' and "So upset right now I'm literally crying. Ugh. Shit." after the ABC sitcom renewed in 2019 for a sixth season.

Wu later clarified, "Today's tweets were following a tough day and not in time with the show news. Plz know, I'm so grateful for the FOTB renewal "I love the cast and crew. I'm proud to be a part of it. For all the fan support, thank you, and for everyone who supports my occasional use of the word goddamn thank you too."

Since then, Wu has left social media behind. Now the "Hustlers" actress has to make up for her absence again.

"I was afraid to come back to social media because I almost lost my life there: three years ago, when I posted negligent tweets about my TV show renewal, it triggered internet outrage and shame that got pretty bad,” Wu wrote. “I felt horrible about what I said, and when some DMs from another Asian actress told me that I was going to become a blight on the Asian American community, I started to feel like I didn't even deserve to live anymore. That I was a disgrace to AsAms, and they would be better off without me."< /p> Related Related

Wu added that a friend found her and took her to the emergency room after a suicide attempt.

"AsAms don't talk enough about mental health," Wu shared. "While we are quick to celebrate victories in representation, there is a lot of avoidance around the most uncomfortable issues within our community. Even my tweets have become such a touchy subject that most of my colleagues at AsAm decided itwas time to avoid me or freeze me."

She summed up, "After a little break from Hollywood and lotsof therapy, I feel good enough to come back here (at least for a little while).

Wu followed up the post with information for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

Wu is currently starring in “The Terminal List” and the upcoming movie “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile.” She also directs "East Bay," writer-director Daniel Yoon's portrayal of the son of Asian immigrants living in the Bay Area and going through a coming-of-age crisis.
