Salmonella deadly warning about bacteria that can kill by infecting the blood

Taiwanese researchers have found that non-typhoid salmonella (NTS) can infect the blood vessels of people in certain risk groups, along with typical symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps

Researchers have warned of an insidious form of salmonella that can kill by infecting the bloodstream.

Regular salmonella - often called food poisoning - occurs when food contaminated with the bacteria is ingested.

The bug can be killed by heat, so it is often caused by undercooking or improperly reheating any type of food, with some such as chicken being particularly dangerous.

But today, researchers in Taiwan have revealed how non-typhoid salmonella (NTS) - which can cause blood vessel infection with its typical symptoms - can have a particularly severe effect on certain groups.

Researchers from National Cheng Kung University have explained how NTS can "invade" the blood vessels of patients with coronary heart disease - thickening of the arteries caused by plaque buildup - which has been recorded in around 50 % of 40s - elderly patients.

Citing other studies, scientists found that up to 40% of patients aged 50 or over had NTS bacteria detected in their system, suggesting that many are at risk.

Salmonella is a common bacterial infection, but it can be deadly and lead to devastating complications.
