Monks have failed drug tests at a small Buddhist temple, leaving it empty.

They all tested positive for drug use in the religious building which was raided by the police.

The monks were all expelled from monastic life after the police unexpectedly arrived at the building in Bung Sam Phan district.

Among the four monks at the temple was an abbot who also tested positive after the group were all tested for drugs using samples of their urine.

District official Boonlert Thintapthai said the temple was located in Phetchabun province and the monks had tested positive for methamphetamine.

An official said the monks were sent to a health clinic for drug treatment.

He said, "The temple is now empty of monks, and the nearby villagers are worried that they can't do any merit,"

Mr. Boonlert said more monks would be sent to enable the villagers to continue their religious obligations.

Illegal drugs were found in all the monks' tests and they were forced to quit the religious order and leave the temple leaving it without any monks in the locality.

The local community was amazed by the raid on the temple where the monks performed religious duties for the region.
