A dog has become a hero after locating exactly where a skier was buried under five feet of snow during an avalanche.

The skier - whose name does not appear in local media - was rescued on a mountain outside Ushuaia, in the province of Tierra del Fuego, in the south of Argentina, on 9 July.

According to reports, two skiers were hit by an avalanche around 8:30 p.m., and one of them was buried under approximately 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of snow.

His buddy sounded the alarm and a search party searched the area for the man who had already been under the ice for an hour.

But it wasn't until Julian Elizari, 57, arrived with Tango the Labrador Retriever, 10, that the search team was able to pinpoint the skier's exact location.

Elizari told local media, "We were having dinner. I still have a bag packed, the family is already accepting it."

He added: "Tango is starting to jump at the door because for him it's a game."

Rescuers arrived at the scene around 10 p.m.

Elizari said, "Tango started doing his job and walked about 10 miles when he started barking and scratching the snow. He had found him.

"We started digging very carefully with shovels, then with our hands. The tango even helped.
