Americans always make things bigger. We had our own scandal with the man responsible - Partygate with its wine and cheese, fixed penalty notices and appearances before select committees.

But across the pond, they need to add some razzmatazz.

Their own former boss is set to get embroiled in a high-profile legal battle involving porn star Stormy Daniels and Hush Money and could be handcuffed by Tuesday.

(Probably not - but we can dream).

It would be a fitting end to one of the most bizarre chapters in US political history.

In fact, 2016 - the election of President Trump - seems to have marked a turning point.

His rise to power sparked a wave of populism across the world and the ripples have been causing trouble ever since.

For a long time, the world seemed like a strange and dangerous place. The war in Ukraine continues to rage, Paris is burning, there is sewage in the rivers and we are out of tomatoes.

Perhaps the prosecution of Donald Trump will mark the end of this period.

When his exploits come to light, Mr. Trump will be exposed for what he is: a television personality who was dangerously underqualified and ill-suited for high office.

Perhaps this will make us all think again.

Politics shouldn't be a personality contest. It should be about who has the best ideas, the political will, the seriousness for the job.
