Sir Elton John has become the latest celebrity to leave Twitter since it was acquired by Tesla boss Elon Musk.

The singer, headlining Glastonbury Festival next year, blamed the platform's "policy change" over misinformation without giving further details.

Twitter stopped taking action against accounts spreading misleading information about Covid-19 last month.

In response to Sir Elton's announcement, Mr Musk said he hoped the star would be back.

In what may be his last tweet, the Rocket Man singer wrote, "All my life I've tried to use music to bring people. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world.

"I have decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent policy change that will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked."

Twitter's controversial CEO, who has started running as the company's head Twit after buying it, responded to the post by saying, "I like your music. I hope you will come back. Is there any specific misinformation that concerns you?"

Since Mr. Musk completed his $44 billion Twitter takeover ( £38.1bn) in October there was controversy over the Covid policy rollback, as well as other measures such as reinstating some previously suspended accounts and billing users for their "blue tick".

A slew of famous faces later logged out of Twitter for good, citing its new leader as main reason for their departure.
