Emma Corrin Hopes For More Awards For Introducing Genderless Acting Categories

Emma Corrin calls for award shows to shift to gender-neutral acting categories.

The 'My Policeman' actor, who identifies as non-binary and uses his pronouns, admitted it's "difficult" to understand the gendered categories of actors and actresses as a non-binary person binary.

"It's hard for me right now trying to justify in my head being non-binary and being nominated in women's categories," Corrin said. "Regarding the categories, do we need to specify if you are nominated for a female or male role?"

Corrin continued on the non-gendered categories, "I hope for a future in which this happens. It's about everyone being able to feel recognized and represented."

The Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, Grammys, British Independent Film Awards and MTV Movie & TV Awards have all moved to neutral categories. The Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys always use gender-specific Best Actor and Best Actress nominations.

"You can discuss awards and representation there, but the conversation really needs to be about greater representation in the material itself, in the content that we see for non-binary people, for people queer, for trans people, because then I think that's going to change a lot," Emmy-nominated Corrin said. "When those parts come out, which means more people and more actors will play those roles, so I think there will be more urgency with which these issues will be addressed."

“Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon, who made history as the first non-binary gender performer to play a non-binary character on a major TV show, wrote an open letter with words similar to the Television Academy in 2017 and another letter to the SAG -Members of the AFRTA SAG Awards Committee in 2020.

"I now recognize, however, that being submitted or nominated in categories that reinforce gender binary should have resulted in my outright rejection of those nominations, in addition to calling for change," Dillon wrote. “I would be happy to serve as a judge, provided you take immediate action to combine your acting awards in gender-neutral categories. This brave and belated step on the part of my union would send a broad message that SAG not only supports me, but also supports all of its non-binary and gender non-conforming members. »

Film Independent chairman Josh Welsh told Variety in September 2022 that it was "not a good approach" to categorize performers by gender. "There are a lot of great artists out there, and I think we'll see more of them who don't identify as male or female," Welsh said. "For award shows, being able to say to one of these artists, 'If you're nominated, you have to choose a man or a woman,' that's just not a good approach."
