England fan exploring Qatar stumbles upon abandoned 'migrant worker camp'

An English football fan explored 'hidden Qatar' while in the Middle East for the World Cup and came across a site abandoned where the workers who built the stadium would have lived

An English footballer was visiting Qatar to support his team at the World Cup when he decided, on a whim, to travel to less explored areas.

On his adventurous day in the Middle East, 21-year-old Rob Dawley came across "a migrant camp", which he was later denied entry to.

After being turned away, his taxi driver took him to downtown Mesaieed, an industrial city in the state of Qatar.

At first, the football fan did not encounter any entrance signs in the entire city center, which consists of several abandoned buildings.

By chance, he then ran into some friendly security guards, who showed him around the apartments in private, as "they were being demolished in a few months anyway".

Rob, a former butcher from Grimsby in Lincolnshire, said: "I came to watch the football with my friend, but on Thursday, between two days of football, I decided I wanted to explore.

"I messaged my buddy whose father lived in Qatar and asked him to recommend a place he wouldn't go to - he gave me a list and Messaieed was there.

“I got on the local metro in Qatar and met someone called Hassan at the bus stop. He told me he was a migrant doctor and lived at a nearby camp, so I followed him."
