England's road to World Cup final after Wales win as stars dream of emulating 1966 heroes

England clinched top spot in Group B with a confident 2-0 win over Wales in Qatar as their compatriot were sent home. The Three Lions dominated the proceedings in the first half but simply couldn't find a way after Marcus Rashford squandered the best chance of the first 45 minutes.

He would deliver a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock, however, after the interval when he hit home a free kick from close range that passed Danny Ward.

It was 2-0 moments later when Phil Foden ran over Harry Kane's beautiful low cross in front of goal to head home.

Gareth Southgate's team selection was certainly vindicated when Rashford, who played with such confidence, then scored his second goal and England's third.

The handbrake has been released again here for the There Lions, who have scored nine goals in three group games - despite a blank shot against the United States.

England can now look forward to a final round of 16 clash against Senegal on Sunday after the African Cup of Nations champions secured second place in Group A.

Aliou Cissé's side conceded the second-half equalizer in their encounter with Ecuador before Kalidou Koulibaly scored the winner.

The Three Lions looked set to take on Ecuador - just like in Germany in 2006 - when Moises Caicedo scored an equalizer from a well-worked corner, but Senegal prevailed.

If England win this match, they will face winner France and potentially Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Les Bleus have already conquered the top spot barring a remarkable goal-difference swing with qualification still up for grabs in Group C.

Lionel Messi's Argentina are currently second, but will win the group if they beat Poland on Wednesday.

If that were to materialize, it is possible that they would finish in second place.

However, there is still a chance that Saudi Arabia could slip through if they beat Mexico and Argentina beat Poland.

If England were to beat France and other potential opponents mentioned, they could meet Holland in the semi-finals.

USA are on course to take on Louis van Gaal's side while the winners of Group C (currently Poland) will also face the runners-up in Group D (currently Australia) in the Round of 16. final.

But with Holland in the lead, they are then the favorable team in this bracket of the tournament.

While there is still plenty of football to be played, the likes of Portugal, Croatia, Brazil and Spain are on the other side of the tournament tree.
