Eriksen 'delighted' to join 'special' Man Utd on free transfer, Murtough details reasons for signing

Manchester United have announced they have signed former Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer.

Eriksen performed well for Brentford last season just months after collapsing while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020.

This is United's second summer signing after Erik ten Hag brought in fellow Dutchman Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.

Having spent time training at Ajax during his rehabilitation, Eriksen is already familiar with Ten Hag's methods and is ready to get to work at Old Trafford.

"Manchester United are a special club, and I can't wait to get started," he said.

"I've had the privilege of playing at Old Trafford on several occasions, but to do it in United's red shirt will be an incredible feeling.

"I have seen Erik's work at Ajax and I know the level of detail and preparation that he and his team put in every day. It is clear that he is a fantastic coach.< /p>

"After speaking with him and learning more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I'm even more excited for the future.

"I still have big ambitions in the game, there's so much I know I can achieve and this is the perfect place to continue my journey."

The PA news agency understands that Eriksen will not be joining his new United teammates as they continue their pre-season tour of Australia.

Eriksen was under contract with Inter Milan when he suffered cardiac arrest in the first half of a Euro 2020 group stage game against Finland on June 12 last year .

After being treated on the pitch, Eriksen was later fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator which meant he was no longer allowed to play in Serie A, leading to his release from the Inter.

He signed for Brentford in January, returning to football a month later as a second-half substitute against Newcastle.

Eriksen scored once in 11 appearances for the Bees, but during his time in west London only Kevin De Bruyne and Martin Odegaard created more Premier League chances.

That was enough to grab United's attention, with director of football John Murtough delighted to sign Eriksen on a contract until 2025.

"Christian has been one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe throughout his career," he said.

"It's no surprise he's had so many options this summer, so we're really happy that he's been convinced this is the right club for him.

"In addition to his exceptional technique, Christian will add valuable experience and leadership skills to the team and we look forward to seeing the benefits of these qualities on the pitch this coming season and beyond."< /p>
