Exam applications: German's popularity continues to decline, but IT is soaring

German, Music and Drama continue to decline in popularity at GCSE and A-Level, according to the latest provisional exam registration figures for England.< /p>

Arts and Design subjects also saw a decline, but Computing saw a strong increase, with A-level entries up 15% from last year and 65% since 2019.

Total intake for this summer exams for GCSE and A-levels has increased, according to figures released by exams regulator Ofqual on Thursday.

Provisional GCSE entries rose by 3.6% from 5,349,250 in summer 2022 to 5,543,840 this summer, while A-level entries rose by 2.3% , from 788,125 last summer to 806,410.

Entries for German A-level are tentatively down 17% from 2,675 last summer to 2,210 this summer, and have fallen by nearly a quarter (24%) since 2019.

Spanish and French also appear to be falling into disuse, with enrollment at A level for both subjects down by 13% year-over-year.

Performing Arts A-Level enrollment has fallen by almost a fifth (19%), from 1,175 in 2022 to 955 this summer, and is down 12% from 2019 figures.

Music and theater both fell 7%. % year-on-year.

The situation is similar at GCSE level, where admissions for performing arts are down 16% from 2022 and 26% from 2019.

Music and Drama GCSE enrollment is both down 14% from 2019, with Music down 12% year-on-year and Drama a down 7%.

Enrollments for art and design subjects are down 3% year-on-year for A-levels and GCSEs.

< p>German GCSE enrollment has fallen by a fifth since 2019 and is down 6% from a year ago, from 36,000 to 33,945.

But the picture is more positive for Spanish, where GCSE enrollment is tentatively up 5% since 2022 and 20% since 2019.

Last summer English Literature dropped from the top 10 subjects most popular at A level for the first time.

Provisional figures for this year show a slight increase of 3% in admissions to 34,000 from 32,910 last summer, although entries are down 9% since 2019.

The rise of computing among A-level students is reflected at GCSE level, albeit on a smaller scale: enrollments have increased by 12% year-on-year and 13% since 2019.
