Dawn Butler calls for the resignation of Oliver Dowden

A Labor MP has demanded that Oliver Dowden quit as Deputy Prime Minister after accusing him of misleading the House of Commons.

In an extraordinary move, Dawn Butler has blasted Rishi Sunak's number two after claiming Labor's green plans would cost mortgagers an extra £1,000 a year.

Ms Butler told the Commons this was untrue and accused Mr Dowden of breaching the Ministerial Code by not setting the record straight.

But she was struck down by Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle, who told her she could only accuse the Deputy Prime Minister of 'inadvertently misleading' fellow MPs.

Rising on a point of order after Mr. Dowden's lackluster performance in the PMQs when he replaced Rishi Sunak, Ms. Butler said: "Mr. Speaker, I don't know if you're shocked, but I am.

"The Deputy Prime Minister had the opportunity to correct the record today when he misled the House on June 7."

Sir Lindsay quickly chimed in, telling the MP for Brent North: 'As you know you can't say misled.

Ms Butler continued: 'The Deputy Prime Minister inadvertently misled the House, but did not come to correct the record, even though we made it clear he had on the cost £28 billion for mortgage holders, or £1,000 a year.

"The only place that appeared was the Daily Mail. He disrespected you, he disrespected Parliament and the House, and according to the Ministerial Code he should now resign."
