Exxon Mobil Wants Me on a Platform: Exploring TikTok's New Prank

To participate in TikTok's coup du jour, users call their loved ones to tell them about an exciting (fake) opportunity to create sponsored content on a oil rig. . Bewilderment usually ensues.

For some social media influencers, brand-sponsored travel is just part of the job. If they're lucky, they might find themselves admiring the Instagrammable blue waters of the Greek islands, or perhaps the pink sunsets of Bali. But what about the endless ocean views from the metal decks of an offshore oil rig?

"So I have to know d 'here tonight, but I was invited on this branded trip,' a young woman told her boyfriend on the phone last week. 'It's with Exxon Mobil.'

A new TikTok prank has prompted dozens of influencers to call their loved ones and tell them a version of the same story: that they were invited on a branded trip to a platform -oil rig off the coast of Texas, financed by Exxon Mobil. Those who received the call (who were not involved in the joke) had mixed reactions.

A father was generally supportive of the idea when his daughter proposed it over loudspeaker. His reasoning? "People don't die there." Someone else responded to the proposal with confusion. “That’s definitely not what she’s following,” she said of her influencer friend’s personal brand. “They follow girls who want limited edition Chanel bags.”

Soph Mosca, 24, an influencer living in Los Angeles, wanted to see what kind of reaction she could elicit from her father, Chuck. He pointedly told his daughter, “It’s a huge undertaking to put on your resume.”
