Sky F1's Karun Chandhok hails the halo device that helped save the lives of Zhou Guanyu in Formula 1 and Roy Nissany in Formula 2.

Carlos Sainz hailed the halo protection device after a dramatic day at Silverstone, saying it "saved two lives" following Zhou Guanyu's big crash in the F1 race and of Dennis Hauger and Roy Nissany's F2 collision.

There were two harrowing crashes on Sunday at the British GP.

At the start of the F1 showpiece, Zhou's Alfa Romeo was flipped over at 160mph at turn one before skidding over gravel and the tire barrier, into the catch fence.

Earlier in the F2 support race, Hauger's car landed on Nissany's.

Incredibly, not all of the drivers involved were injured, but both incidents could have killed drivers were it not for the halo, which sits above cockpits and was first introduced on cars - with many reviews about aesthetics - in 2018.

"We sometimes criticize the FIA [F1's governing body] but you have to tell them how much they have helped us," said Ferrari driver Sainz, eventual winner of the British GP. "They probably saved two lives.
