This dazzling structure, one of the best-preserved amphitheaters in the world, is just one of the breathtaking sights in Pula that bear witness to the 700-year reign of the Romans.
Yet this bustling town at the southern tip of the heart-shaped Croatian peninsula of Istria wears its impressive history lightly. Roman ruins are dotted around the place almost casually, brushing against the cranes and shipyards of its industrial port.
We enjoyed the unlikely juxtaposition - Pula looks like an authentic working town rather than a tourist trap set in the asp.
