A family of seven, including a child, were massacred by gunmen in a ruthless gang-style execution at their home, according to Mexican police.

The bloodbath in Boca del Rio, in the state of Veracruz in Mexico, occurred on Sunday evening and killed three people, three women and a child.

The Attorney General's office confirmed that an armed group broke into the house while family members were sleeping.

Neighbors called the police around 11:45 p.m. after hearing rapid gunfire.

At the time of writing, no one had been arrested and the prosecutor's office had given no clues as to the identity of the perpetrators.

The police still don't know which gang the killers belong to.

Of the seven dead, one man survived but later died in hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, according to local media.

Police did not release his name, but he was allegedly in the meat business.

The Attorney General pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice, but local media were quick to point out that more than 94% of crimes committed in Mexico go unpunished.
