Johnny Herbert breaks silence on abrupt Sky Sports ax as he starts new business

Johnny Herbert has admitted to being kicked out of Sky Sports F1 and doesn't know why he was fired. Herbert was a key part of the broadcaster's Formula 1 coverage, but his contract was not renewed until last campaign.

The former F1 star explained that a phone call in December with show bosses sealed his fate, but admits he was 'moving on' as he started life in a new project.

He said to the: "I didn't decide to walk away - I thought everything was moving forward!" And then I got a call in December, I think it was, when I was told things were changing. It was not explained why or what was changing. There was a mention of social media stuff and that was about it, really. I really don't know.

"I was always aware - at Sky they do these subscriber checks where they give you points out of 10 - and I always knew that I was still very popular on that side. C It's a shame, but I'm done with this. Let's move on."

The ex-Jaguar driver now presents his own podcast alongside former British F4 driver Billy Monger. The duo's Lift the Lid show is uploaded to streaming services after each Grand Prix and features analysis mixed with fan questions.

Herbert announced the show last month and has already taped 13 shows. Advertisement on social media, Monger wrote, "BUZZING to share with you my new podcast @liftthelidpod alongside LEGEND @johnnyherbertf1, discussing everything @f1 around the new season."

Herbert agreed to move to rival broadcaster Channel 4 "didn't come into play". He added, "There are a lot of other opportunities, but in terms of seeing me on a TV screen, there's probably nothing planned for that."

Herbert revealed he would be leaving the channel in January by posting a touching tribute on Instagram. Uploading a press photo of himself alongside the rest of the show's analysts, he wrote, "We will miss this team."

Specialist Naomi Schiff responded with a heartwarming message, commenting, "We will miss you the most, Johnny. Had so much fun with you. What a good soul!"

Ahead of the 2023 season, Sky Sports F1 have also parted ways with former British F1 driver Paul di Resta.

They didn't directly replace the role of Di Resta or Herbert with a rotating cycle of experts used at different events. However, they have secured the services of former Aston Martin strategist Bernie Collins, who made his on-air debut in Saudi Arabia.
