Fifa investigating how chief Salt Bae arrived on the pitch at the World Cup final

Fifa has launched an investigation into how influential social media chef and restaurateur Salt Bae and others gained access to the pitch after the World Cup final in Qatar.

The Turkish chef, who has a string of his Nusr-Et restaurants in cities including London, Dubai and New York, was shown holding, kissing and pretending to sprinkle salt the World Cup trophy, and interrupting the celebrations of the Argentine players after their victory on penalties against France.

The trophy is not supposed to be touched or held only by a select group of people, including tournament winners and Fifa officials.

Salt Bae, real name Nusret Gökçe, could also be seen trying to get the attention of Argentina captain Lionel Messi after the game. Photographs were later posted on Gökçe's Instagram account.

A statement from the governing body said: "Following a review, Fifa has established how individuals were granted improper access to the pitch after the closing ceremony at Lusail Stadium on December 18.

"Appropriate internal measures will be taken."

Gökçe a makes his signature gesture of sprinkling salt on the trophy, held here by Argentinian Lisandro Martinez.

Gökçe went viral on social media in 2017 after a video showed his method of preparing and seasoning steak in front of diners.
