First trailer for "A couple" by Frederick Wiseman with Nathalie Boutefeu

Couple Trailer

“Your power has crushed my life and my personality too.” Film Forum in New York has revealed a trailer for the first narrative film by renowned documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. It's called A Couple, also known as Un Couple in French, and it's not really a movie - a 63-minute bedroom play. A Couple follows a long-term relationship between a man and a woman. The man is Leo Tolstoy. The woman is his wife, Sophia. It's nothing more than an hour of a woman reading letters and dairies written by Sophia, his young wife, whom he didn't seem to like. French actress Nathalie Boutefeu portrays Sophia as a "determined, loving and hot-tempered woman who recognizes the limits of a long-term marriage with a world-famous man". Which is to say, she didn't really understand that she was married to someone who didn't really care about her. It premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, where I ranked it as the worst film of the festival. Barley even a movie. But that's just my opinion and others might appreciate this poetic film about love and desire. Take a look.

Here is the first official trailer for A Couple by Frederick Wiseman, straight from FF's YouTube:

"All happy families are alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Author Leo Tolstoy's famous overture to Anna Karenina easily applies to the early years of his passionately delirious marriage to a woman 16 years his junior, as well as their later years, marked by violent arguments, guilt and recriminations. The prolific documentary maestro Frederick Wiseman (46 feature films since 1967) fashioned a moving and empathetic monologue from the diaries of Sophia Tolstoy, with whom the great writer had 13 children and who, as a secretary, copied his masterpiece, War and Peace, seven times. Shot in beautiful and idyllic settings worthy of a Russian countess. A Couple, also known as A Couple, is directed by acclaimed director of American documentaries Frederick Wiseman, his very first narrative feature film after numerous documentaries, including Ex Libris, Monrovia Indiana and City Hall more recently . This premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival this year. Film Forum will debut Wiseman's A Couple in select U.S. theaters starting November 11, 2022 this fall.
